It all started with a little guy named Doc...
Doc was only 3 years old when he ended up in rescue. He had been abused and starved and eventually returned to the breeder. It was said that he was a "mean dog." It was very quickly realized that there wasn't a mean bone in Doc's body and the search was on for a loving home so well deserved by this special guy. You could never have told me at the time that the home Doc was looking for was ours. Allergies and asthma in my family had always ruled out having a dog. We resigned ourselves to this, not realizing that there are breeds that are much less likely to cause problems in households like ours. Fate stepped in and showed itself in quite a few ways to bring us together with Doc. It was fate that one member of my family persistently campaigned for a dog. It was fate that she was friends with a special young lady named Julie. It was fate that Julie worked for Carol Strong. And most of all it was fate that myself and my father were in a snowmobile accident one day. The resulting concussions were just the opportunity the rest of the family had been waiting for! We had agreed to have a dog, they said. We just couldn't remember due to our head injuries! The very next day Doc came home to live with us. The agreement made was that Doc could come live with us but he had to sleep in a crate and be confined to a certain area of the house. This lasted approximately 5 minutes. Doc jumped onto the couch, cuddled up next to us, and stole all of our hearts. It wasn't long before we decided that Doc really would love to have another dog around for company when no one was home. We called Carol, wanting to do for another dog what we were able to do for Doc - give a loving home to a dog that had a rough beginning. Into our lives entered Theo, our token Shih Tzu. Shortly after the arrival of Theo, vacation plans left me dog sitting for Doc and Theo. I was absolutely enamored by them but had never lived with them as they were my parent's dogs. A wonderful week was spent and the life and love they brought to my home was contagious. I was now officially hooked and the minute they were gone I once again called on Carol. Fate again was on my side as she had just had to face the sad reality that a beautiful dog she imported from England was not meant to be a show dog. I brought home my very first Lowchen that week, sweet and loving Jazz. I was quite happy having Jazz when soon after I received a call from Carol. She had Jazz's sire flown in from England to her and had made a few breedings. Was I interested in co-owning a dog with her? I didn't have a clue what co-owning a dog with someone meant, but I did know that it meant I was going to get another Lowchen. Jackson blasted into our home shortly thereafter, and as soon as he hit 6 months of age Carol started taking him to shows. Having never been to a dog show but knowing my Jackson was going to be in one meant I tagged along. After tagging along to a couple of shows, I figured if my dog was going to go into the ring then why shouldn't I be the one to take him? All I had to do was walk in a big circle, right? It became obvious from the first step it is far from that easy. But it is that fun, and I was hooked. I was hooked not just on the competition aspect, but on the social aspect as well. My love for the Lowchen has opened a world to me that I would never have entered without them. I have made lifelong friends and met people from all walks of life that I would never have otherwise met. My world is better and fuller, and it's all because of a little guy named Doc.
